Apollo Beach is located in southern Hillsborough County. Gibsonton, borders the Apollo Beach to the north. It is bordered to the northeast by Riverview and to the east by Balm, to the southeast by Sun City Center, to the south by Ruskin, and to the west by Tampa Bay.

Apollo Beach started in 1923 on land owned by the Dickman family. The area was then used annually for farming and grazing pasture. Much of what is now known as Apollo Beach was mangrove and because of the low-elevation of the land, it was considered uninhabitable.

In the 1930s, Paul Dickman envisaged the idea of making Apollo Beach a waterfront community. He felt the location was ideally located equidistant between Tampa and Bradenton. Today, Apollo Beach is a thriving waterfront community with year-round boating, fishing, and other water activities. There are an estimated 55 miles of canals leading to Tampa Bay.

Some other interesting facts about Apollo Beach are that the median household income above state average and the unemployed percentage of individuals is significantly below state average. Additionally, the percentage of population with a bachelor’s degree or higher is above state average. One of the larger tourist attractions in Apollo Beach is Life Oceanic, an aquarium.
